According to U.S. media reported, U.S. President Barack Obama held a "gay pride month" celebration in the White House at the evening of June 22, and he said that legislation will make laws to protect equal rights for homosexuals as soon as possible.
In the White House East Room, Obama gave a speech to gay, lesbian and bisexual persons come from across the U.S.. He said:"We still face a very difficult task." He emphasized that homosexual couples should enjoy the same rights as heterosexual couples. He promised to fight fully for equal rights for homosexuals, including granting homosexual couples hospital visitation rights, abolition related laws "do not ask do not tell" in the army. The so-called "do not ask do not tell" policy is that in principle the military don’t welcome homosexuals, but they will not take an active role to ask servicemen’s sexual orientation and servicemen do not have to take the initiative to tell the military their sexual orientation. But once the servicemen or servicewomen say that they are homosexuals openly, they will be dismissed. Obama promised that he will achieve the promise during his tenure.
At the same time, Obama said the United States Department of Labor will soon introduce a new policy which allows homosexual employees are entitled to 12 weeks of unpaid leave as other employees when their partner gives birth or adopt children.
It is reported that the Obama administration has made many achievements to protect the legitimate rights and interests of homosexuality compared with the previous U.S. administrations. However, Obama would not implement major reforms to avoid angering conservatives. Some representatives of homosexual groups were not satisfied with Obama "slow" policy and they criticized that the president only achieved "trivial rights" for them.
