1. So many people!
“I think it was the sheer numberof people that got me. People crammed into subway cars, cars lined up as far asthe eye could see, the sidewalks so filled that you had to walk on the street。”

2. Expansion rate.
“Cities are growing at analarming pace. The amount of construction going on everywhere is amazing. Witha good view of the town, I could see half a dozen cranes. In America, askyscraper may be built and it would take several years. In China, youliterally see half a dozen cranes right next to each other building 10skyscrapers at the same time to be completed in a few months. Leaving andcoming back in a couple of years means entire cities have sprung up thatweren't there before。”

5. Small vehicles with enormousloads。
“I'm amazedat how much can fit on a tiny vehicle. Bundles of plastic bottles about a yardwide and tall are stuck on the back of a bike. An entire family fit on a moped.A little tractor carried a pile of sticks at least six feet tall, and severalpeople were perched on top。”

6. Personal space。
“They appear not to have anyconcept of personal space. While taking a leak in a packed bathroom at theForbidden City, I could actually feel the guy behind me, as he stood theirwaiting。”

Fried scorpions? No problem.Silkworms? Make sure the ones your vendor is selling are still wiggling, so youknow they're fresh. Look over there, it's a roasted whole sparrow on a stick, head included. And of course dog meat is readily available at restaurants。
